Kicking Up the Dust at Hunter/Jumper Shows

Riding Center trainer Sarah Sanders with students Britnie and Natalee (and TB Private Bryan and Mikey)
Britnie Mallet on TB Private Bryan
Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses and Arabians, oh my!  It was an equine smorgasboard of riding talent from The Riding Center (aka Desert Bred Arabian Farm) that went to the Fall Hunter/Jumper Shows at Cornerstone Farms.

Coached by Sarah Sanders, these students ranged from first time show novices to 'been there, done that' veterans.  Judging by the beautiful photos (by Bobbi Sanders of Lone Oak Photography - thank you Bobbi!), it was a success!

Left - Britnie Mallet showed TB ex-racer Private Bryan.  Bryan is a stunner and is surely developing a very large fan club.  He is also for sale to a lucky person who is looking for an elegant mover.

Left - Natalee shows her new TB, Mikey in Hunter classes and below

Left, Lori Zackrie and her Desert Bred gelding, DB Bolero.
Bolero and Lori have done it all.  After winning several AERC Limited Distance rides, and galloping cross country courses in foxhunting with the Shawnee Foxhunters, Lori is now taking on the Hunter/Jumper world - watch out everybody!

Destin Cylkowski showed her new TB, Radar in the Jumper classes.

And Rochelle Weaver shined with her new QH, Fancy.  Before Fancy and Rochelle came together, Fancy spent her early years giving walk/trot/canter lessons and occasional trail rides.  Now with Rochelle in her life, Fancy has become a force to be reckoned with in the Hunter ring.  Some of her curves have melted into muscle and a light glows in her eyes with the new challenges she's found in life.  It's been wonderful watching these two develop their partnership together.

New Owners for our Desert Breds!

Olivia, DB Aramis Agenda and DB Zaina

Olivia and DB Zaina
It's always exciting to see our clients find their perfect matches with our horses, and we're celebrating some great pairings.

Olivia and DB Aramis Agenda at RWE Clinic at Longmeadow Ranch
Olivia and daughter Britnie recently welcomed 3 of our horses into their family.  Olivia has been challenging her young anglo/arab gelding DB Aramis Agenda as she brings him along in the Ride With Excellence program.  She was having so much fun with Aramis, she added another Desert Bred to her mix with the mare DB Zaina.  Don't they all look gorgeous together?

Pictured left is Olivia at a recent demonstration clinic with Sarah Sanders at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch showing how rollbacks are done, on Aramis.

Britnie and DB Bint Yuniya

Don't blink your eyes or you'll miss Olivia's daughter Britnie on her new Desert Bred, DB Bint Yuniya!  Shown at left are Britnie and Yuniya in action at the Longmeadow Demo Clinic.

Another of our anglo/arabians, DB Rising Rhapsody, found her soul mate with Lindsey.  Lindsey loves her versatility and it sounds like she plans on trying every discipline out there with her girl - and with the talents of those two, we're sure there's nothing they can't do!

Jill and DB Dharma
Jill and Keith enjoy trail riding and previously had quarter horses that weren't quite right for them.  Jill found a nice match for her in gelding DB Shetan, and then soon realized she needed a horse with a little more 'go' and found her riding partner in the mare DB Dharma.
Keith and DB Sambuca at the RWE Clinic at Longmeadow Ranch
Similarly, Keith found the anglo/arab DB Sambuca a lovely confident even tempered trail horse that was just the right partner for him.  He and Jill and have been enjoying their new riding buddies with overnight camping trips with them to explore many of the great parks and trails in the area.

Sheri and AAS Al Hamdani
Sheri has been helping us keeping our horses fit and sharp while she's helped exercise them over the past year.  She discovered one had a special spot in her heart, the gelding AAS Al Hamdani.  Sheri is a veteran endurance rider and is looking forward to many rides with Hamdani.

Congrats to all!

Endurance News!

Training Ride at Greensfelder Park with Paula and DB Dahman, Sheri and AAS Al Hamdani and Jill Maschoff and DB Dharma, photo by Cindy Stafford
The Desert Breds have been back at it this summer kicking up the dust on the endurance trails.  Sheri Devouassoux and Paula Kaigh have found a way to get to some rides in between the spring mud and monsoons and the summer oppressive heat.  And we're glad they did for they were hugely successful!

At the June Dead Dog Creek ride in Kinmundy IL, Paula Kaigh won the 30 mile LD on DB Dahman with a time of 3:23, with Sheri following close behind on Paula's horse, Ibn Desert Dhellal with a time of 3:25 and a 3rd place finish.  What a great start to the season!

At the July Endure for the Cure ride in IL, Paula and DB Dahman finished 4th out of 22 in the 50 mile endurance ride with a time of 5:59.  Sheri and her new gelding AAS Al Hamdani finished 6th out of 9 with a finish time of 4:13.  The 2nd day Paula and her gelding Ibn Desert Dhellal finished 9th out of 14 in the 50 mile ride with a time of 8:27.

On a roll, Paula and Sheri tackled the August Rock River Charity ride at Matthiesson State Park in IL.  Paula and DB Dahman finished the 60 mile ride in 4th place with a finish time of 8:19.  Sheri and Hamdani swept thru the 30 mile LD in 3rd place, just 2 seconds from 1st!  Paula and Ibn Desert Dhellal wrapped up the weekend with the 30 mile LD on Sunday with a completion credit, due to some frustratingly confusing trail markings.  But a happy healthy sound finish is still a win!

Congratulations all!

Colts on Parade

The 2010 baby boys have been busy frolicking in the warm weather, and our local roving photographer (and boarder) Pastor Carl Bowlin has been catching them in action!  His photos were too good not to share.  Thank you Carl! (He and LaVonne Bowlin are happy owners of the lovely Arabian mare and former racehorse, Copper, the adorable quarter horse Buttercup, and their pride and joy Sulayman, their colt out of Buttercup by the Desert Bred stallion DB Ibn Najem Huda).

The Dhaman Strain at Desert Bred Arabian Stud

Here at Desert Bred Arabians, we're blessed to be able to breed horses of several of the bedouin strains from the Arabian Peninsula:  Abayyan, Hamdani, Kuhaylan, Dahman.

The Dahman strain resembles somewhat the Abayyan and Saqlawi (related) strains in elegance but with more of the strength of the Kuhaylan. It is an intermediate blend of the Kuhaylan with the Saqlawi-Abayyan type. The head is short and broad like the Kuhaylan but with more bulge and jibah. They are compact with lines more like the Kuhaylan but with more over all refinement. They are of medium build usually with dry, flatbone.

The Dahman strain is presently represented at Desert Bred Arabian Stud by only one female line, that of *Sawannah imported from Bahrain in 1954. The line is carried on through her daughter, *Hadriya by the previously mentioned, *Jalam Al Ubayan. This line descends from a Dahmah mare of Sheikh Sulman bin Hamid al Khalifa, ruler of Bahrain. The Al Khalifa family has occupied the island country of Bahrain since 1783 and they were originally from a branch of the Anazah confederation.

The horses of this line have shown prowess as performance horses.  DB Dahman, a gelding out of the mare DB Jasidah by DB Shahhat.  Dahman and his owner, Paula Kaigh, have successfully completed 1230 endurance miles, which include 8 Best Condition awards and 10 first place finishes.

DB Bint Dahmah, owned by DB Arabians, a 2002 black mare out of DB Dahmah by DB Najem Huda, finished her first Limited Distance ride at Endure for the Cure this year in 3rd place.  She's showing all the ability of her dam, pictured below.

DB Dahmah, also owned by DB Arabians, has competed in Limited Distance rides as well, and must share the same racing genes her half brother, DB Dahman.  Her record includes 2 Best Condition awards and 2 1st place finishes.

DB Ibn Najem Huda, a 2006 Stallion out of the Dahmah mare, DB Jamalah, displays phenomenal athletic ability this strain is known for.  Ibn Huda displays ultimate self carriage and true natural collection.

This strain is very rare in the United States, with only a handful of breeding horses left of this line.  We are very privileged to be able to help preserve these lines.

A Year in Review - Part II

And more of 2011!

It was a pleasure to welcome new boarders Fran Jenkel and her lovely Missouri Fox Trotter Baby Girl, along with Jill Stone, new owner of Fancy and Beethoven.  Fancy has been giving people lessons for years, just a nice trusty mount to have.  Beethoven is a Desert Bred arabian gelding who charms everyone he meets.

Carl and LaVon Bowlin's Quarter Horse mare had a gorgeous colt this year, by the DB Arabian stallion DB Ibn Huda.  They've named him Ibn Alfahl Huda and call him Sulaymann.  LaVon says he's purrrrrfect - perfect personality, perfect color, perfect in every way :).

A Year in Review

Wow, this winter has gone by fast and I am so tardy in doing a 2010 wrap up, but let's get started!

The Desert Breds and boarders/riders of The Riding Center have been very busy.  In 2010 we saw lots of action on the endurance trails.  Katie Davis returned to her endurance roots and debuted DB Airs Aidah in her first LD rides this fall.  Their first ride they finished in 3rd, and their second ride they finished in 1st place and won Best Condition (BC)!  A great start to Aidah's endurance career and the two make a great team!

DB Bint Dahmah also made her debut on the endurance trails this year, first with Sheri Devouassoux at the helm in the Endure for the Cure ride in July.  Then Elena Macia joined her cousin Katie on the Ozark Trail riding Bint Dahmah for a 2nd place finish in the 35!

Lori Zackrie took a break in between jumping and fox hunting with the Shawnee Hounds, and took her two endurance veterans, Ehmirah and DB Bolero, to the Ozark Trail ride.  Lori finished 3rd and 1st place in the LD's and BC in both!

DB Hula Mayya made her endurance debut also in the Ozark Trail. With Paula Kaigh setting the pace in front on Ibn Desert Dhellal, Hula and her rider Cindy (me) finished in great condition (Hula was in better condition than Cindy :)).

Paula Kaigh didn't let the dust settle on any endurance ride she tackled and had another fabulously successful season.  With her two geldings, DB Dahman and Ibn Desert Dhellal, she completed 7 out of 7 rides that included 5 1st place finishes and 3 Best Condition awards for a total of 250 miles.

Paula Kaigh and DB Dahmah 55 mile Ozark Trail Endurance Ride 1st place finish and BC

And Sheri Devouassoux was instrumental and getting several young Desert Breds in shape for their first rides and getting them through those rides in great condition and well paced.  First she took Ibn Dhellal thru a very frigid State Fair Express ride in the spring.  Then with a brief outing to Old Dominion just for a bit of an extra challenge, she returned to our little midwest corner to take DB Bint Dahmah, DB Zahrah and DB Al Amhara on their first LD rides.

While the endurance riders were braving frigid temps, dust and heat, The Riding Center horse crowd was wowing judges in the show arenas. Lindsey Kelley, Devin Isselhard, Katy Jasper, Ginny Sanders and many more I am sure forgetting to mention competed in hunter/jumper shows such as Cornerstone Farms.  These girls are very enthustiastic about the 2011 season and have formed their own club, the Midwest Performance Horse Club, and will truly be a force to be reckoned with this upcoming season!

Desert Bred Arabian Stud farm was so pleased with the turnout for the Open House we held with Guest Speaker Joe Ferriss.  So many people came from quite a distance a way, and it was wonderful to catch up with old friends and make new ones.  We also got to catch up with even more kindred spirits at the Al Khamsa convention in Kentucky and were honored to have been able to demo two of our studs, DB Khrush and DB Ibn Jalam.

It's always a joy to see our friends find their perfect horse and this year was no exception.  Carl and LaVon Bowlin welcomed the gentle arabian mare Copper into their family, along with a bouncing baby boy (more on him in another post!).  Jill and Keith Maschoff joined our Riding Center family, along with two quarter horses, Chloe and Bailey, and one of the Desert Bred geldings, DB Shetan.  It's been wonderful seeing them get back into the swing of being horsey people again!
Sara Yoch brought another man into her life, a handsome brunette named DB Kalif and she's very excited about their upcoming adventures.

Sara Yoch and DB Kalif

Katy Jasper, who had quickly outgrown DB Shetan, found the challenge she needed in the spry little  Desert Bred mare DB Caprih.  Caprih is a warmblood jumper in a 14.1 hand arabian body :).
Lindsey Kelly joined The Riding Center gang as well with her gorgeous Thoroughbred gelding Mikey.  Lindsey was able to quickly bring Mikey out of race track mode into a beautiful and graceful hunter horse and made their show debut this year!
